Ingredients
Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Dip Mixture
- 8 ounces smoked Gouda cheese, shredded
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Garnish
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions along with salt and pepper. Cook gently, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes until the onions become deeply golden brown and richly caramelized, developing a sweet and buttery flavor.
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the dip.
- Combine the Dip Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded smoked Gouda, softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and minced garlic. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated into a smooth, creamy mixture.
- Fold in Onions: Gently fold the caramelized onions into the cheese mixture, distributing them evenly without breaking up the onion strands too much.
- Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the dip evenly into a small baking dish, spreading it out to ensure even cooking.
- Bake the Dip: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the dip is bubbly around the edges and slightly golden on top.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the dip from the oven and sprinkle with fresh chopped chives. Serve warm alongside crackers, toasted bread, or fresh vegetables for dipping.
