  • Total Time: 30-35 minutes
  • Yield: 2 large calzones (6 servings)

Ingredients

  • For the Filling:
    • ½ lb ground beef
    • ½ white onion, diced
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
    • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
    • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
    • ¼ teaspoon paprika
    • ¼ teaspoon cumin
    • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • ½ cup mozzarella cheese
    • 2 tomatoes, sliced (Campari tomatoes are recommended)
  • For the Dough:
    • 1 12″ pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • For the Egg Wash:
    • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, diced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook for 7-9 minutes until the beef is browned and the onions are soft.
    2. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
    3. Stir in the tomato sauce, basil, oregano, brown sugar, paprika, cumin, and Worcestershire sauce. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.
  2. Preheat the Oven:
    1. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C).
  3. Prepare the Dough:
    1. Cut the pizza dough in half and roll each piece into 7″-9″ circles. Transfer the dough to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  4. Assemble the Calzones:
    1. Sprinkle ¼ cup of mozzarella cheese on one half of each calzone.
    2. Top with sliced tomatoes and ½-¾ cup of the ground beef and tomato sauce mixture.
    3. Gently fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape, then pinch the edges together and fold them to seal. Repeat with the second calzone.
  5. Egg Wash:
    1. In a small bowl, whisk the egg.
    2. Brush the egg wash over the top of each calzone.
  6. Bake the Calzones:
    1. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    1. Remove the calzones from the oven and serve with ranch dressing or your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer a vegetarian option, you can substitute the ground beef with mushrooms or ricotta cheese and spinach.
  • For extra flavor, add crushed red pepper flakes to the filling for a spicy kick.
  • Serve with a side salad for a complete meal.
