Candied Walnuts are a deliciously sweet and crunchy snack made by coating walnut halves with a buttery mixture of brown sugar, honey, and salt, then baking them to a golden brown perfection. Perfect as a topping for salads, desserts, or enjoyed on their own.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 2 ½ cups

Ingredients

Walnut Mixture

  • 2 ½ cups (292.5 g) walnut halves or pieces
  • ¼ cup (50 g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup (85 g) honey
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make clean-up easier.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the walnut halves, light brown sugar, honey, kosher salt, and melted unsalted butter. Stir well until the walnuts are thoroughly coated with the sweet butter mixture.
  3. Arrange Walnuts: Spread the coated walnuts in a single, even layer on the prepared baking sheet to ensure they bake evenly.
  4. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the walnuts for 15 minutes. Stir the walnuts halfway through at the 7-minute mark to promote even browning. Look for a deep brown color indicating they are done.
  5. Cool and Stir: Remove the walnuts from the oven and stir them while spreading out on the baking sheet. After 5 minutes, stir again to keep them separated. Allow them to cool completely to achieve a crunchy texture.
  6. Optional Additional Crisping: If the walnuts are not crunchy enough after cooling, return them to the oven for an additional 10 minutes to enhance crispness.

Notes

  • Air Fryer Instructions: Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper. Spread the coated walnuts in a single layer. Depending on your air fryer size, cook in batches as needed. Air fry at 350°F for about 6 minutes, stirring halfway through for even cooking. Transfer the nuts to parchment paper to cool completely.
  • Store candied walnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • These walnuts are great as a salad topping, snack, or sprinkled over ice cream and desserts.
