A creamy and nutty Japanese sesame salad dressing that is quick and easy to prepare. This dressing adds a delightful toasted sesame aroma and flavor to any green salad, enhancing the freshness with a balanced blend of mayonnaise, soy sauce, and honey.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 3 servings

Ingredients

Sesame Dressing

  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1-2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Crush Sesame Seeds: Use a pestle and mortar to crush and grind the toasted sesame seeds. It’s okay to leave some seeds whole to add texture.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, add the crushed sesame seeds, mayonnaise, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add Sesame Oil: Drizzle in the toasted sesame oil and mix thoroughly to incorporate the oil into the dressing.
  4. Adjust Flavor and Consistency: Taste the dressing and adjust the seasoning to your preference. If the dressing is too thick, add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of water gradually until the desired consistency is reached.

Notes

  • Best served with a green salad containing 3-4 cups of lettuce (about 120g), a medium cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and 1-2 hard-boiled eggs. This salad serves 3-4 people.
  • Use raw unhulled sesame seeds and toast them in a skillet over medium heat for a richer flavor and better texture than hulled white sesame seeds.
  • Western-style mayonnaise is preferred for this recipe. If using Japanese mayo (Kewpie), increase the rice vinegar slightly for better balance.
  • Sesame seeds can be substituted with tahini; add gradually and adjust to taste.
