A delicious and easy-to-make fish sandwich with a crispy exterior and a creamy wasabi tartar sauce that gives an Asian-inspired twist. This sandwich is packed with flavor and ready in just 30 minutes!

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • For the Wasabi Tartar Sauce:
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp wasabi paste
  • Salt (to taste)
  • For the Fish Sandwiches:
  • 4 (6 oz) pieces firm white fish (such as halibut, tilapia, or cod)
  • 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Fresh lime slices (for garnish)
  • 4 firm buns
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Sliced radishes
  • Shredded cabbage
  • Fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Make the Wasabi Tartar Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, soy sauce, lime juice, and wasabi paste. Taste and season with salt as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Prepare the Fish: Sprinkle both sides of the fish fillets with Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Prepare the Coatings: In a shallow dish (such as a pie plate), combine flour, ginger, and garlic powder. In a separate shallow dish, whisk the eggs. In a third shallow dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat the Fish: Working with one piece of fish at a time, lightly coat the fish in the flour mixture, then dip it in the egg mixture, and finally coat it in panko breadcrumbs. Press the panko into the fish to ensure it sticks well.
  5. Fry the Fish: Heat about ¼ inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the fish for about 3-4 minutes per side or until golden and crispy. Transfer the fried fish to a cooling rack set over a baking sheet and squeeze a lime slice over each piece.
  6. Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread the wasabi tartar sauce on the inside of the top and bottom of each bun. Place the fried fish fillet on the bottom bun, then top with sliced cucumbers, sliced radishes, shredded cabbage, and cilantro. Place the top bun on and serve immediately!

Notes

  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add extra wasabi paste to the tartar sauce.
  • Feel free to use other types of fish like tilapia or cod if halibut is not available.
  • For extra crunch, add pickled jalapeños or carrots to the sandwich!
