This easy cheesy patty melt recipe combines juicy seasoned beef patties with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and melted Gruyère and sharp cheddar cheese, all sandwiched between buttery toasted bread for a delicious comfort food classic.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef / beef mince
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Vegetables

  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 250 g (½ lb) mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1-2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Sandwich

  • 8 slices bread
  • 2 cups grated cheese (Gruyère and sharp cheddar)
  • Butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Shape Patties: Split the beef into 4 equal balls then flatten them with the palm of your hand to roughly the size of your bread slices.
  2. Season Patties: Season both sides of the patties generously with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 5-6 minutes per side until deeply golden and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. Caramelize Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook on medium-low for 20-30 minutes until onions are deeply caramelized and both vegetables are soft and silky. Add Worcestershire sauce during cooking if desired. Adjust heat to prevent burning.
  5. Assemble Sandwiches: Layer each slice of bread with a cooked beef patty, a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture, and a few slices of grated cheese. Top with the second slice of bread.
  6. Butter and Cook Sandwiches: Butter the outsides of each sandwich. Cook in a clean pan over medium heat until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted, about 3-5 minutes per side. Covering the pan with a lid helps the cheese melt faster.
  7. Serve: Remove the patty melts from the pan, slice in half, and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use good quality ground beef for best flavor.
  • Caramelize onions and mushrooms slowly for maximum sweetness and texture.
  • Gruyère and sharp cheddar give a perfect melty, flavorful cheese combination, but you can substitute with your favorite melting cheeses.
  • Cover the pan when cooking the sandwiches to help melt the cheese quickly without over-browning the bread.
  • Adjust seasoning on patties according to taste preferences.
  • Worcestershire sauce is optional but adds a nice umami depth to the onions.
