French Onion Rice Bake, also known as Stick of Butter Rice, is a rich and savory side dish made with long grain rice, French onion soup, beef consommé, and butter. It’s baked to perfection with a golden, buttery top and deep umami flavor.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1¼ cups long grain rice
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can beef consommé
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into thin slices
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Add the rice to an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  3. Pour in the French onion soup and beef consommé. Stir to combine.
  4. Lay butter slices evenly over the top of the rice mixture.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and continue baking uncovered for another 30 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the top is golden.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use salted butter or add a sprinkle of Parmesan before the final bake.
  • This recipe doubles well in a 9×13-inch dish—just adjust bake time slightly if needed.
  • Perfect side dish for roast meats, chicken, or grilled vegetables.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the microwave or oven.
