- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
Instructions
- Prepare the Biscuit Topping:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, milk, melted butter, and egg.
- Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese until the mixture is combined. Set aside.
- Cook the Meat Mixture:
- Heat a large 12-inch oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef, diced onion, and diced bell peppers, cooking until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender.
- Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Add the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, salt, red pepper flakes (if using), tomato sauce, and ketchup. Stir to combine.
- Simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes.
- Assemble the Casserole:
- If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, transfer the meat mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Dollop the biscuit topping evenly over the meat mixture and spread it out as best as you can.
- Bake the Casserole:
- Place the skillet or baking dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuit topping is golden brown and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- For extra flavor, add some shredded mozzarella cheese to the biscuit topping.
- You can also make this casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it until ready to bake.
- Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms or zucchini to the meat mixture for a healthier version.
