Ingredients
Puff Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 1/4 cup artichokes, chopped
- 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cracked black pepper to taste
- Red pepper flakes to taste
Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten with 1 tsp water
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Thaw 1 sheet of puff pastry according to package instructions, ensuring it’s fully thawed but still cold for easier handling.
- Prepare the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine chopped fresh spinach, chopped artichokes, shredded parmesan cheese, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Cut and Spread Puff Pastry: Cut the puff pastry sheet in half to create two rectangular pieces. Spread the spinach artichoke filling evenly over one half of the puff pastry sheet.
- Assemble the Swirls: Lay the other puff pastry sheet carefully on top of the filled sheet to create a sandwich with the filling in the middle.
- Slice and Twist: Using a sharp knife, cut the puff pastry sandwich into 6 even long strips along the longer side. Take each strip, twist it several times, then roll into a swirl shape. Tuck the ends underneath to help retain their shape during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash: Place the swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops gently with the beaten egg mixed with water to achieve a golden and glossy finish after baking.
- Bake: Bake the swirls at 400°F (200°C) for about 25 minutes, or until they become golden brown and the puff pastry is cooked through. Oven bake times may vary, so monitor closely towards the end.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and allow the swirls to cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy this flavorful appetizer.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is thawed but still cold to make it easier to handle and prevent tearing.
- You can substitute mayonnaise with Greek yogurt for a lighter version.
- Adjust the amount of garlic and red pepper flakes to suit your taste preference.
- For a crispier finish, bake on the middle rack and rotate the pan halfway through baking.
- These swirls can be prepared ahead of time and frozen before baking; just add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from frozen.
