Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup white granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup canned coconut milk
Instructions
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the all purpose flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Whisk them together thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the ingredients.
- Make the arepa dough: Add the canned coconut milk to the dry mixture. Using your hands, mix until the dough forms a consistent, smooth ball. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, then let it rest on the counter for 30 minutes to allow hydration and easier handling.
- Prep to fry: Heat a generous amount of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. On a clean surface lightly dusted with flour, roll out the dough to your desired thickness. Using a glass or cookie cutter, cut the dough into circles.
- Fry the arepas: Carefully place the dough circles into the hot oil. Fry each side for a few minutes until they puff up and turn a light golden brown. Once cooked, transfer the arepas to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Resting the dough is essential for better texture and easier shaping.
- Use medium heat to avoid burning the arepas while ensuring they cook through.
- You can adjust the sugar amount depending on your preferred sweetness level.
- Ensure oil is hot enough before frying to achieve a crisp exterior.
- Serve these arepas plain or with your favorite spreads for added flavor.
