Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2½ cups (312.5g) all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
Add-ins
- 1 cup medium cheddar cheese, shredded
- ¼ cup fresh chives, finely chopped
Wet Ingredients
- 2 cups (490g) buttermilk
- ½ cup (1 stick, 113g) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Lightly spray a 7×11-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, kosher salt, and garlic powder until well blended and aerated.
- Add Cheese and Chives: Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese and finely chopped fresh chives into the dry mixture, distributing the flavors evenly.
- Incorporate Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk and stir carefully until the mixture is mostly combined, making sure not to overwork the batter to keep the biscuits tender.
- Prepare Baking Dish with Butter: Pour the melted unsalted butter into the prepared baking dish, coating the bottom thoroughly. This butter will soak into the biscuits, adding richness and flavor.
- Transfer and Spread Dough: Spoon the biscuit dough on top of the melted butter in the dish. Use a spatula or your hands to evenly spread the dough all the way to the edges of the pan.
- Cut Dough into Biscuits: Using a knife, cut the unbaked dough into 8 equal squares directly in the pan to form individual biscuits.
- Bake Biscuits: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 26 to 28 minutes, or until the biscuits have risen and the tops turn a delightful golden brown.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to sit for a few minutes so that the melted butter is absorbed, enhancing flavor and moisture. Serve warm.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter to ensure the biscuits remain soft and fluffy.
- Fresh chives can be substituted with green onions if preferred.
- The melted butter poured into the dish creates a rich buttery crust on the bottom of the biscuits, don’t skip this step.
- Serve these biscuits warm for the best flavor and texture experience.
- These biscuits freeze well; reheat in the oven to restore crispiness.
