4.3 from 6 reviews

This easy homemade applesauce recipe combines the natural sweetness of apples with nutritious vegetables like carrots and butternut squash, enhanced with a touch of lemon juice and warm cinnamon. It’s a wholesome, fiber-rich, and comforting sauce that’s perfect as a snack, side dish, or ingredient in other recipes. Cooked on the stovetop and pureed to your preferred texture, this versatile applesauce can be enjoyed warm or chilled.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: About 4 cups

Ingredients

Fruits and Vegetables

  • 6 apples, cored and roughly chopped (skins on for extra fiber or peeled if preferred)
  • 2 large carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 cups cubed butternut squash (fresh or frozen)

Other Ingredients

  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place the chopped apples, carrots, butternut squash, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and water into a large pot. Stir well to mix all the ingredients evenly.
  2. Bring to Boil: Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a boil over high heat to start the cooking process and soften the ingredients.
  3. Simmer until Tender: Reduce the heat to a simmer, keep the pot covered, and let cook for 15-20 minutes. The fruits and vegetables should become tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  4. Puree the Sauce: Use an immersion blender to puree the cooked mixture to your desired consistency. If you don’t have an immersion blender, allow the mixture to cool slightly and puree in a standard blender. For a chunkier texture, use a potato masher instead.
  5. Serve or Store: Enjoy the applesauce warm or cool it completely before transferring to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for several months.

Notes

  • You can peel the apples if you prefer a smoother texture, but keeping the skins adds fiber and nutrients.
  • Frozen butternut squash works just as well as fresh and can save prep time.
  • Adjust the amount of water to achieve your preferred applesauce thickness.
  • For a sweeter sauce, add a small amount of honey or maple syrup, if desired.
  • This applesauce can be used as a topping for oatmeal, yogurt, or as a substitute for oil in baking recipes.
