Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup + 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (divided)
- ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Topping Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Dipping Sauce Ingredients
- 8 tablespoons butter
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Prep. Preheat your oven to 400ºF (204ºC). Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly spray it with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Mix the dry ingredients. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined.
- Add wet ingredients. In a separate bowl or cup, combine the water and canola oil. Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently as you go.
- Form the dough. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, gently mix until a soft dough ball forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky. If it’s too dry, add water one tablespoon at a time; if too sticky, add extra flour.
- Knead. Lightly flour your work surface and sprinkle with ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese. Transfer the dough to the surface and knead vigorously for 5 minutes to develop structure and incorporate the cheese.
- Shape the dough. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin into a rectangle about 12 inches long along the longer side.
- Add toppings. Sprinkle the remaining grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top of the dough, followed by fresh ground black pepper. Press lightly so the toppings adhere to the dough.
- Cut and bake. Using a pizza cutter, slice the dough into 1-inch wide breadsticks. Transfer them to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12 to 14 minutes until lightly browned on top.
- Finish with garlic salt. While the breadsticks bake, combine ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder in a small bowl. When the breadsticks come out of the oven, immediately brush their tops with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with the garlic salt mixture. Keep warm.
- Make the dipping sauce. Melt 8 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and skim off and discard any foam on the surface. Whisk in 2 teaspoons garlic powder and ⅛ teaspoon salt until well combined.
- Serve. Transfer the warm garlic butter dipping sauce to a serving bowl and serve alongside the freshly baked garlic breadsticks.
Notes
- Ensure the dough isn’t too sticky to handle; add flour sparingly to avoid tough breadsticks.
- Using Parmesan cheese in the dough and as a topping adds a wonderful savory flavor and slight crunch.
- Cut breadsticks evenly to ensure uniform baking.
- Brush the breadsticks with garlic salt butter immediately after baking to maximize flavor absorption.
- The garlic butter dipping sauce can be kept warm while you prepare the breadsticks to serve fresh and hot.
- Make sure to discard the foam on the melted butter to keep the dipping sauce smooth and clear.
