Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup Sea salt (Kosher size)
- 8-10 Green onions (Greens only, approximately 1 cup of gently compressed greens)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven or Dehydrator: Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature setting or set your dehydrator to 135°F (57°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper if using the oven, or place a silicone liner or parchment paper on the dehydrator tray.
- Prepare the Green Onions: Thoroughly wash and dry the green onion greens, removing the whites. Roughly cut the greens into 3 or 4 pieces to fit easily into your food processor.
- Chop and Combine: Pulse the green onion greens in the food processor for a few seconds, then stop to stir. Pulse again until finely chopped. Add the sea salt and blend until fully combined.
- Spread the Mixture: Pour the green onion and salt mixture onto the prepared baking sheet or dehydrator tray. Spread it out in a thin, even layer for efficient drying.
- Dry the Salt Mixture: Place the tray in the oven or dehydrator. If using the oven, dry for 2 to 3 hours at the lowest setting, stirring about every hour. For the dehydrator, dry for 4 to 5 hours, stirring occasionally as well.
- Store the Dried Green Onion Salt: Once the salt mixture is fully dried and cool, transfer it to an airtight jar. Store in a cool, dry place for up to one year to maintain freshness.
Notes
- Ensure the green onion greens are completely dry before processing to avoid clumping.
- Adjust the thickness of the salt layer when drying to avoid uneven drying or burning.
- Stirring every hour helps achieve an even texture and prevents moisture spots.
- This green onion salt can be used as a seasoning for meats, vegetables, soups, and salads.
- Store in an airtight container to preserve flavor and prevent moisture absorption.
