This Hibiscus Spiced Apple Cider is a warm and inviting beverage that combines the natural sweetness of apple cider with aromatic spices like cinnamon, cloves, and allspice, enhanced by the floral tartness of dried hibiscus. Perfect for cozy evenings or festive gatherings, this cider can be served hot or chilled over ice for a refreshing twist.

  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 3 servings

Ingredients

Apple Cider Base

  • 3 cups apple cider

Spices

  • 1 cinnamon stick (2-3 inches, broken into pieces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice

Floral Flavor

  • 1 tablespoon dried hibiscus

Instructions

  1. Combine spices and cider: Add 3 cups of apple cider to a small pot. Break the cinnamon stick into smaller pieces and add it along with the cloves and allspice to the cider. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  2. Simmer for flavor infusion: Let the cider simmer for 5 to 20 minutes depending on your preferred flavor strength. The recommended simmer time is about 10 minutes which allows the spices to infuse nicely into the cider.
  3. Add hibiscus and continue simmering: Stir in 1 tablespoon of dried hibiscus and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to extract the tart, floral notes.
  4. Strain and serve: Remove the pot from heat and carefully strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove the cinnamon pieces, cloves, allspice, and hibiscus. The cider can be served immediately hot or cooled and poured over ice for a refreshing cold drink.

Notes

  • Adjust simmering time to your taste preference for stronger or lighter spice flavors.
  • Use a fine mesh strainer to ensure no small spice particles remain in the finished cider.
  • Serve hot during colder months for a comforting drink, or chill and serve over ice in warmer weather.
  • Store any leftover cider in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently before serving.
