Ingredients
Apple Layer
- 1 Tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter, melted
- 3 large apples, cut into 1-inch chunks (about 4 cups or 480g)
- 3 Tablespoons (38g) packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crumb Topping
- 2/3 cup (135g) packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Small pinch salt (about 1/16 teaspoon)
- 6 Tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
Optional for Serving
- Ice cream
- Salted caramel
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Line six 6-ounce ramekins on a baking sheet to prepare for baking.
- Prepare the Apple Layer: Brush the inside of each ramekin with 1 tablespoon of melted butter to grease them thoroughly. In a large bowl, combine the apple chunks, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Stir until the apples are evenly coated. Divide this apple mixture evenly among the prepared ramekins.
- Make the Crumb Topping: In a medium bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt using a fork. Then, fold in the melted butter gently to form large crumbles. Be careful not to over-mix, as it will turn the mixture into a paste. Evenly sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples in each ramekin, pressing slightly so it fits well. It’s fine if the topping is piled high as it will bake down.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet with the ramekins in the preheated oven. Bake for 32-36 minutes, or until the crumble topping turns lightly toasted and the apples appear soft and tender.
- Serve Warm: Remove the ramekins from the oven and serve your apple crumbles warm. For extra indulgence, you may add a scoop of ice cream and drizzle with salted caramel on top.
- Storage and Reheating: If you have leftovers, cover and store the apple crumbles in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or in the oven before enjoying again.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Fuji for the best texture.
- Ensure the butter used in the topping is melted but slightly cooled to mix evenly without turning the flour into a dough.
- Don’t over-mix the crumb topping; large crumbs create a better texture.
- Baking times can vary depending on your oven; check for lightly toasted topping and softened apples as indicators of doneness.
- If desired, serve with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce to complement the warm crumble.
- Individual portions bake evenly in 6-ounce ramekins, making it easy to serve and store leftovers.
