This Sweet and Spicy Curry Hummus offers a delightful twist on classic hummus by blending chickpeas with aromatic curry powder, warming turmeric, fresh ginger, and a touch of sweetness from pure maple syrup. Perfectly balanced with a gentle heat from cayenne pepper, this creamy spread is ideal as a snack with crackers, veggies, or as a flavorful sandwich enhancer.

  • Total Time: 17 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 1/2 cups

Ingredients

Hummus Base

  • 1 15 oz can chickpeas, drained but with the liquid reserved
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda (optional, for removing chickpea skins)
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1 clove garlic
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Spices and Flavorings

  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, increase to 1/2 teaspoon for extra spice)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Drain Chickpeas: Drain the chickpeas over a colander, reserving the liquid in a bowl for later use. If you prefer not to remove the skins, proceed directly to step 5.
  2. Prepare Chickpeas for Skin Removal: Rinse the chickpeas and place them in a small microwave-safe bowl. Toss them with 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda to help loosen the skins.
  3. Microwave Chickpeas: Microwave the chickpeas for 90 seconds. This softens them to facilitate skin removal.
  4. Remove Chickpea Skins: Transfer the hot chickpeas into a large bowl and cover with cool water. Gently rub the chickpeas between your hands to detach the skins. Drain the cloudy water with skins and repeat 4-5 times until all skins are removed.
  5. Blend Ingredients: Add the prepared chickpeas (skins on or off), 1/4 cup of the reserved chickpea liquid, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, salt, curry powder, turmeric, grated ginger, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup into a food processor or blender. Blend until completely smooth, about 60 seconds. Add additional chickpea liquid 2 tablespoons at a time if the mixture isn’t blending smoothly.
  6. Adjust and Serve: Taste the hummus and adjust seasonings as necessary. Serve immediately with crackers, chips, fresh vegetables, or use as a sandwich spread.

Notes

  • Removing the skins of chickpeas results in a creamier hummus but is optional.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper quantity based on your desired spice level.
  • You can substitute maple syrup with honey if preferred.
  • Use the reserved chickpea liquid (aquafaba) to adjust texture without thinning the flavor.
  • Store hummus in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
