A delicious and hearty black bean burger recipe perfect for a plant-based meal with bold spices and optional cheese. These burgers are baked or grilled to perfection, offering a satisfying texture with a smoky and savory flavor. Ideal for a healthy, protein-rich vegetarian burger option.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 patties

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 (14-ounce) cans black beans, drained, rinsed, and patted dry
  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 3/4 cup (100g) finely chopped bell pepper (1/2 of a pepper)
  • 1 cup (130g) finely chopped yellow onion (1/2 of a large onion)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced (about 1 Tablespoon)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup (60g) bread crumbs or oat flour
  • 1/2 cup (70g) feta cheese (optional, skip if vegan)
  • 2 large eggs (see note for vegan substitution)
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons ketchup, mayo, or BBQ sauce
  • Pinch salt + pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beans: Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Spread the drained and rinsed black beans evenly on a lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes to slightly dry them out, which helps improve the burger texture.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: While the beans bake, heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped bell pepper, onion, and minced garlic, sautéing for 5-6 minutes until the vegetables soften and release moisture. Blot out excess moisture gently.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Transfer the sautéed vegetables to a large bowl or food processor. Add the ground cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, bread crumbs (or oat flour), feta cheese (if using), eggs, soy sauce, ketchup (or mayo/BBQ sauce), salt, and pepper. Stir or pulse to combine.
  4. Add and Mash Beans: Add the slightly dried black beans to the mixture and mash gently with a fork or pulse briefly in the food processor, ensuring some chunks of beans remain for texture.
  5. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into patties, approximately 1/2 cup (130g) each, about 3/4-inch thick.
  6. Bake the Burgers: Place patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake at 375°F (191°C) for 10 minutes on each side, totaling 20 minutes, until cooked through and slightly crisp on the outside.
  7. Alternative Grilling Method: For grilling, place patties on greased aluminum foil and grill on medium-high heat (350°F to 400°F / 177°C to 204°C) for about 8 minutes per side, adjusting time and temperature based on your grill’s strength.
  8. Serve: Serve the black bean burgers with your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, pickles, or sauces. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • To make this recipe vegan, substitute the 2 large eggs with flax eggs (2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 6 tablespoons water, let sit for 5 minutes).
  • You can skip the feta cheese for vegan version or if avoiding dairy.
  • For gluten-free, use gluten-free bread crumbs or substitute with oat flour.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste based on desired spice levels.
  • These burgers freeze well; freeze patties on a tray and then transfer to a bag for up to 3 months.
