Tirokafteri is a spicy Greek feta dip made with roasted red peppers, creamy feta cheese, olive oil, and a kick of chili pepper. This vibrant and flavorful dip is perfect as an appetizer or accompaniment to bread, vegetables, and grilled meats. Ready in just 5 minutes, it combines the tanginess of feta with the smoky sweetness of roasted peppers and a customizable heat level.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 medium roasted red peppers
  • 1 cup feta cheese (approx. 250g or 8.5oz), crumbled
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar (any type such as red wine or white vinegar)
  • 1 red chili pepper, or chili flakes (adjust quantity to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Ensure the red peppers are roasted and peeled beforehand. Crumble the feta cheese to make it easier to blend.
  2. Add ingredients to food processor: Place the roasted red peppers, crumbled feta cheese, olive oil, and vinegar into the food processor bowl.
  3. Incorporate chili pepper: Wearing gloves, cut the red chili pepper in half and add half of it to the food processor. Process the ingredients until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
  4. Adjust heat: Taste the dip and add more chili pepper or chili flakes if you prefer a spicier dip. Process again until the dip reaches your desired consistency and heat level.
  5. Serve: Transfer the tirokafteri to a serving bowl and serve chilled or at room temperature with bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • Wearing gloves when handling chili peppers prevents irritation from capsaicin.
  • Roast the red peppers over an open flame or oven for best flavor and peel off the skin before blending.
  • You can substitute vinegar types according to preference; red wine vinegar adds a nice authenticity.
  • Adjust the spiciness by adding more or less chili pepper or substituting with chili flakes.
  • Tirokafteri keeps well refrigerated for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
