Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 14 oz extra firm tofu, drained and patted dry (no need to press)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning
For Serving
- Soft or hard taco shells
- Sour cream (optional, for serving)
- Cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
- Tomatoes, diced
- Pico de gallo
- Salsa
- Avocado slices
- Guacamole
- Fresh lime juice (to taste)
Instructions
- Heat the oil and soy sauce: Warm 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of soy sauce in a large skillet over medium heat. This creates a flavorful base for the tofu to absorb while cooking.
- Prepare and crumble tofu: Use your hands to crumble the extra firm tofu directly into the skillet. Be sure to leave some larger chunks to provide a satisfying texture resembling traditional taco meat.
- Add taco seasoning: Sprinkle the entire taco seasoning packet evenly over the tofu in the skillet to ensure each bite is well-seasoned.
- Sauté tofu until crispy: Cook the tofu mixture over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, allowing it to brown and crisp on the edges. To develop good color and texture, let the tofu sit undisturbed for 2 to 3 minute intervals before stirring. This helps caramelize the tofu and infuse it with the seasoning.
- Assemble tacos: Serve the cooked tofu taco meat on soft or hard taco shells. Add toppings such as sour cream, cilantro, diced tomatoes, pico de gallo, salsa, avocado slices, guacamole, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice to customize each taco to your liking.
Notes
- Using extra firm tofu ensures the best texture for crumbled taco meat.
- Do not press the tofu; patting it dry is sufficient to remove excess moisture.
- Allow tofu to brown in intervals without stirring to develop crisp edges.
- Feel free to customize toppings based on preference or dietary needs.
- For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free taco seasoning and soy sauce.
