Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes
- 2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes (approximately 3 medium-sized)
Spices and Sweeteners
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup real maple syrup
Butter
- ⅓ cup butter, cubed
Instructions
- Prepare the sweet potatoes. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into rounds about ⅓ to ½ inch thick to ensure even cooking and tenderness.
- Arrange in slow cooker. Place the sliced sweet potatoes into the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker, layering them evenly.
- Add seasonings and sugar. Sprinkle salt, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar over the sweet potatoes. Stir gently to combine the ingredients uniformly.
- Add maple syrup. Pour the real maple syrup over the sweet potato mixture and stir carefully to distribute it evenly without breaking the slices.
- Top with butter. Cut the butter into 6 to 8 cubes and space them evenly on top of the sweet potatoes to melt and enrich the dish as it cooks.
- Slow cook the sweet potatoes. Cook the mixture on ‘high’ for 2 ½ to 3 hours or on ‘low’ for 5 to 6 hours. If possible, stir the sweet potatoes once or twice during cooking to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
- Remove potatoes and keep warm. Once cooked through and tender, transfer just the sweet potato slices into a bowl and cover with a plate to keep warm, leaving the cooking liquid behind.
- Thicken the glaze. Pour the remaining cooking liquid into a saucepan and simmer over medium-high heat, whisking frequently, until it thickens to a glaze consistency. Alternatively, remove the slow cooker lid during the last 30 minutes of cooking to reduce and thicken the liquid.
- Serve. Spoon the thickened glaze over the warm sweet potato slices and serve immediately for a deliciously sweet and spiced side dish.
Notes
- For best results, use a 6-quart slow cooker to allow enough space for even cooking.
- Stirring the sweet potatoes during cooking helps prevent them from sticking and ensures uniform glazing.
- You can adjust the amount of brown sugar or cinnamon to suit your taste preferences.
- If you prefer a less sweet dish, reduce the maple syrup slightly.
- Allowing the glaze to thicken separately enhances the flavor and texture contrast on the sweet potatoes.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, holiday dinners, or vegetarian meals.
